Description
A native of Japan and one of the most reliable Snakebark maples, growing well and almost always producing strong autumn colours. The three-lobed leaves have a reddish tinge to them when they emerge in the spring, turning a dark glossy green for the summer and depending on the conditions will turn anything from yellow through to red in the autumn. The young bark tends to be dark green with white striations which give it the name ‘snakebark’ but this can fade with age.
We have seen several examples of other Snakebark maples being coppiced, stooled or pollarded in order to emphasize the colouring as well as a way to control the size eventual size of the tree. This is not something we’re tried yet but may well be worth experimenting…
