Description
Acer palmatum ‘Crimson Queen’* has to be one of the best and most well-known of the red/purple dissectum Japanese maples. Left to its own devices, its weeping branches will create a low, wide mushroom-like shape; if the central leader is trained on a bamboo cane for a few years, you can easily create a more upright shape with cascading branches. Plant in at least half a day of sun to ensure good colour – purple in summer and bright red in the autumn. Brilliant in a container or in a raised bed/rockery where it can tumble down and show off.
*Previously known as Acer palmatum subsp. dissectum ‘Crimson Queen’, it has since been decided by those in the know that ‘dissectum’ should not now be considered a sub-species.
