Description
Acer palmatum ‘Satsuki beni’ is an unusual cultivar with leaves that emerge very pale green in the spring with the tip of each lobe looking as if it had been dipped in red ink. The red colouring fades as the season progresses but reappears in mid summer as the tree puts on a second flush of new growth. Belonging to the Amoenum Group, the leaves of Acer palmatum ‘Satsuki beni’ are not deeply divided, giving them a rounded appearance.
The autumn colour is striking, in the best years being a mix of golds, reds and oranges. Perfectly happy in all but the very hottest positions, this tree will make a lovely addition to the garden with its upright habit, perhaps making around 4 metres in 10 to 15 years. As with others, the size can be controlled with careful pruning or be growing in a container.
