Description
This popular cultivar was discovered as a chance seedling at the Trompenburg Arboretum in the Netherlands and is almost immediately recognizable. The curved leaf margins of the deeply divided leaves give the impression of claws and make for a dramatic looking tree. The almost glossy purple leaves hold their colour well when in plenty of sun and turn an array of staggering scarlets in the autumn. Acer palmatum ‘Trompenburg’ grows as an upright tree with a fairly open habit and is suitable in the ground or in a container.
