Description
Acer palmatum ‘Seiryū’* is a beautiful cultivar that is not well known enough (in our humble opinion). It is one of the fastest growing Japanese Maples and soon creates a lovely upright tree with thin willowy branches that give it an almost instantly recognisable habit. Most dissected leaf forms tend to have a more spreading form and so ‘Seiryū’ is unusual in this respect.
It will be happy in a sunny position where the foliage will be a yellowy-green for most of the summer before turning reds and golds in the autumn. Also happy in the shade but you should expect more muted colouring, as with all maples.
*Previously known as Acer palmatum subsp. dissectum ‘Seiryū’, it has since been decided by those in the know that ‘dissectum’ should not now be considered a sub-species.
